KAISHIN

Kaishin, Malibu, CA

WHERE:  Kaishin, a Chinese restaurant located in the heart of Malibu next to Bank of America in the Webb Way shopping center.

We all get excited when a new restaurant opens up in Malibu, and this was no different.  Malibu needed a Chinese restaurant that didn’t break the bank.  The food is just as good, if not better than Mr. Chow.

The dishes are light and fresh, with a gluten free menu option. The menu is quite extensive, with dim sum options on the weekend.

We loved it.  We will definitely go back.

MOTHER SAYS:

We all shared the crunchy chopped kale salad with a light lemon vinegar dressing, this was my favorite.  I loved the almonds and the shaved fennel in this dish, it was simply delectable with all of the flavors and textures popping in my mouth. YUM!

The chicken chow mein was also unbelievably delicious, I mixed it with the salad for perfect bites.

The chicken fried rice was almost as good as the chow mein, but not quite.

The kids enjoyed all of these dishes.  It is always fun to go to restaurants where dishes are served family style…

Chicken Chow Mein

DAUGHTER SAYS:

The noodles in the chow main were sweet, sour and yummy, I had two platefuls.

The fried rice tastes like popcorn, I love this food.

I sort of liked the pork dumpling… I really only like the insides.

They serve these crunchy chips with a sweet dipping sauce before your food comes, it is so good.

This Chinese food is much better than Mr. Chow.

OVERALL RATING:

LOCATION/AMBIANCE: 5 out of 10 – Nice, but the outside area is in the middle of a walkway.  The Inside area is a bit stale.  We highly recommend this spot for takeout.

SERVICE: 8 out of 10 – Good service, we never waited long for anything.

FOOD: 9 out of 10 – Really delicious Chinese, Charlotte and I both preferred it to Mr.Chow.

OVERALL: 7 out 10 – Aside from the ambiance, everything was perfect. We are so happy to have a great, affordable Chinese restaurant in Malibu.  Try it!

MR. CHOW

WHERE:  Mr. Chow located in the Malibu Country Mart at the old NOBU location.

For the purpose of fairness, it should be noted that Mr. Chow, Malibu opened on December 31st, just 12 days prior to our visit.

With all new restaurants there are growing pains and Mr. Chow, Malibu is no exception.

However, Moda Foodies is a blog by a mother and her young daughter who want to share their restaurant experiences in the fairest way possible.

We went on a jam packed Saturday night – it was so hectic it made our heads spin.

Our friend, Christa accompanied us to review this new Malibu hotspot, it was going to be a fun girls night out.

MOTHER SAYS:

We ordered family style – the Mr. Chow noodles, the sea bass with ginger and cilantro, the shrimp rolls and the fried rice.

The fried shrimp rolls were my favorite, so crisp and crunchy with a light sauce for dipping.  The fish was pleasant and cooked perfectly – it mixed nicely with the noodles (I would have preferred a more spicy noodle dish).

The fried rice – we had to ask repeatedly for – finally came out with our dessert.  It was disappointing.   Christa thought it was bland and not as good as Benihana’s fried rice.

DAUGHTER SAYS:

I sort of liked the noodles but not really.  I really wanted the fried rice but it took forever.  In the end, I had seconds on the rice, but I did not like the shrimp rolls.

I ordered the chocolate mousse torte with raspberry sauce, it was yum.

OVERALL RATING:

LOCATION/AMBIANCE: 5 out of 10 – it was so loud, we could not hear each other speak.  Christa said, “It’s TGI Friday’s loud in here.”  There is no place to wait for your table, it is chaotic.  There is a nice covered outdoor patio overlooking the parking lot.  The interior is all white and very upscale.

SERVICE: 5 out of 10 – subpar, we were seated without menus – it took fifteen minutes to receive them.  Dirty plates and glasses were not removed from our table.  We had to ask repeatedly for someone to find our waiter.  Food we ordered was forgotten and our bill was wrong.  It was not fine dining, but the prices were.

FOOD: 7 out of 10 – family style chinese, it was good but not fabulous.

OVERALL: 6 out 10 – loud, crowded, over-priced with unacceptable service.  When you are paying premium prices, you expect premium service.  We will not be returning anytime soon because we want to give them a chance to improve their service before we review it again.  We wish them the best.
